The Office of Government and Community Relations acts as a liaison between MIT and the local and state government. In Cambridge, staff work closely with public officials and the broader community on topics of mutual interest including transportation, housing, climate change, development, community support, and the innovation ecosystem. The Institute provides the City with an update on its campus activities in the annual Town Gown Report.
The office maintains active ties with public officials in the Commonwealth, as well as organizations focused on regional policy matters. The MIT Washington Office oversees the Institute’s federal relationships.

Government Engagement Resources for the MIT Community
P&P 12.1 Relations with Government and Community
MIT has a history of engaging in meaningful working relationships with the federal government, the city of Cambridge and other communities, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MIT’s government relations activities are supported and coordinated by the Office of the President.
P&P 12.7 Political Action
The Institute encourages all students, faculty, staff, and employees to exercise their rights and duties as citizens to participate as individuals in the electoral process. Federal and state laws, however, clearly distinguish between the political activities of individuals and those of tax-exempt institutions such as MIT.
